Finger painting and fine motor skills

Children need to learn to develop their fine motor skills. One way for them to develop their fine motor skills is to allow them to finger paint. Buy some non-toxic paint that is safe for children and some strong white paper for them to use. You will also need to buy some big paint brushes…

Teaching Your Children Time

When a child comes into the world they do not know or have the concept of time. They may hear their parents telling them that they need to be at an appointment or an activity by a certain time. It’s never a good idea to hurry our children along constantly or expect them to immediately…

Accentuate Your Children’s Strengths

Children look to their parents for guidance and encouragement. They want to make their parents proud and be successful in life. A parent’s job is to help the children to reach their full potential. Allow your children to try things and fail sometimes to learn how to handle it. It’s also important to allow your…

Some skills that children first starting school need to learn are how to get along with other children. They need to be taught how to share, take turns and how to make friend. Children when they start preschool or kindergarten often learn these skills or if they had siblings, they learn by interacting with them. Some children are not taught these skills at home or due to having siblings that never shared with them they do not know how. Children all come into the world with different temperaments as well and some children are more aggressive than others. They don’t know how to wait their turn, share or how to even make a friend. We are doing children a great disservice if we have them enter school without understanding the social rules or allowing them to have selfish behaviors that affect other children.

I have worked with children both at preschool and elementary school levels and have seen children as young as preschool bully other children. I often wonder to myself where are these children learning this behavior from. I have seen children as old as elementary school not know how to take turns or share. Eventually other children do not want to play with children that don’t have the social skills necessary to get along with others. Parents who don’t teach these skills are actually setting their children up for failure in relationships.

A teacher is often too busy with curriculum to have to constantly deal with children that are missing social skills or have constant behavior problems. Learning these skills starts at home, and the parents are a child’s first teacher. If children do not learn these skills at home, they have to learn them in school either through other children or through the teacher. Why not give your child the skills that are necessary to be successful in life.

Very true. It is a pity that so many adults don’t behave as we would like their children to. Children (and many adults) also need to be taught that not everyone needs to be like them, and that someone being different is not justification for unpleasant behaviour towards them.
