What has happened to our culture and shows that are offered on tv now ? When I was growing up we had shows such as the Brady Bunch, Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. These shows taught lessons to kids and allowed children to learn about family. I don’t really see any of these types of shows on anymore. Has our culture, tastes and priorities changed over time ?
There are very few family shows on now and the ones that are on I would not recommend to children. The values that are on tv with many shows are not things I think we should be teaching children. Many children are plopped down in front of a tv for most of the day or in front of video games all of which show violence. There are the shooting video games and not to mention that we start children young in front of electronic devices anymore. Electronic devices have become babysitters for many parents anymore. I have seen children as young as two while working in a preschool know how to pull up children’s shows on an iPad. Things like Coco Mellon and other popular shows that are available on the iPad. A child is very easily able to pull these shows up on the iPad and very adept at navigating them. When a teacher asked a child’s parents who was constantly requesting the iPad in the preschool about his ability and constant need to watch the parent denied him watching them much at home. It was stated that he only watches them on long car rides when he is traveling. Imagine that he only does that occasionally yet is able to navigate at age two how to find videos and shows on an iPad. I had trouble finding them myself as an adult. Who do these parents think they are kidding? It’s whatever is easiest and most convenient to them.
