Children often do well with pets. Pets provide companionship and comfort to children. Children who have pets learn the responsibility of caring for something. They learn to feed, water and walk their pets depending on the type of pet they have. Dogs are great pets for children, and a child can often learn how to care for their pet, walk them and play with them.
Cats are a little easier in some ways to care for but, still require almost the same amount of care. A child can learn to scoop the litter box depending on their age. They can learn to brush their cat or dog. When shopping they learn to pick out toys for their pets. Cats are great companions for children as they will often sleep with your children and don’t play as roughly as dogs.
For small children I suggest dogs that are smaller in size as children do well with smaller dogs. Cats do often need to be declawed or at least have their nails trimmed so they don’t scratch your children. Both dogs and cats can keep your children company and are great first friends for them.
Children get to bond with their pets, and they learn the responsibility of taking care of them every day. Your children can be the ones to pick out a unique name for their pets. They can also come along and help shop for the supplies for the pets. A bed for a dog or cat is a good idea to purchase so they have a place all their own to sleep. A cat tree is a good toy for a cat to have as they often like to climb and sit up high. Balls, fake mice, string and yarn are all great toys to purchase for cats. Dogs often like balls and squeaky toys.
Teaching your child to walk their dog provides them with exercise and free air. It again teaches them the responsibility of owning a pet and caring for them. I think having a pet is a great investment to make for your family and it will provide good companionship for years to come.
