Life challenges and joys for women

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Reminders of Summer

Hot Pretzels and cotton candy Feet all wet and sandy Sunshine’s rays Ocean mists and sprays Teachers no longer teach Hot and sandy beach Collecting different shells Ocean tides and swells Castles and sand caves Surfers riding ocean waves I own the rights to this poem it is not to be produced or copied in…

Cat Poem

You frolic and play Like a lion hunting your prey Pouncing around all day Those big green eyes that stare and in them I can see you care The cute button nose on your face The pitter patter of your paws as you race That motor that hums and purrs The cute little body that…

Freedom

What does freedom mean to you? Can you imagine going through every day of your life and not having freedom? Freedom means the ability to do things without the sense of control over you all the time. It means having choices as to what you can do and when you can do them. Freedom means…

I often wonder what happened to the world that we used to live in. It seems almost everything is replaced by technology. We are raising children in an age where some rarely even go outside to experience the joys of playing in the fresh air. Learning to ride a bike, fish in the creek, play on the playground or just pick a dandelion.

When I was growing up children played together in the neighborhood and played outside exploring their environment. It seems that this doesn’t happen as much anymore with organized sports, activities and technology leading the way. Children learned to use their imagination and explore their environment. They discover things like turtles, fish, shells or rocks. The also learned to play with others in their neighborhood and get along with them. Parents were less concerned with getting ahead and more with spending time with their kids.

I long for the days when these things took place. When the neighbor was there for you and you are were there for them. Why can’t be go back to the simple days where children got to be kids and parents helped them to enjoy the outdoors? Why can’t we foster the kind friendships where most kids got along with each other.

Why not take your kids to the beach, park or playground this weekend? Spending time with your kids is time you will never get back and is extremely important to their development. Go swimming when it warms up, skip rocks together or simply take in a movie.

I saw a comment once from an American psychologist noting how sad it is that the only time he sees a group of kids at a park, they are all wearing a sports uniform and being told by some adults what to do.
While I let our now adult girls grow up fairly free in suburban New Zealand, and they did go and just hang with their friends as they got to that age, social pressure meant that they were very uninterested in anything too ‘outdoorsy’. Now they seem to have developed the “keep them indoors and keep them safe” mindset with their children. Meanwhile, at 70 I am still out hiking and backroad 4WD exploring. I am just waiting for the kids to get old enough for me to start ‘corrupting’ them with the outdoors.

It’s sad to me in today’s world that children do not play outside freely anymore. It was one the greatest joys of my childhood being able to play outside. I’ve been told by the younger generation that we are in a different world today and it is not really safe to play outside do to crimes such as child snatching. I have always been with my kids when they were growing up and we were outside.

I love that you still keep that sense of wonder to go hiking and 4WD exploring. Love it.
