When you read books to children it not only helps them to learn but fosters a love of reading.

Children when read to learn many different skills. Reading with a child sitting in your lap can strengthen the bond with your child. When I child sits on your lap or next to you this fosters social emotional development and empathy. Brain connections are also formed when children are read to and they learn language skills. Memory is another great thing that develops from being read to and listening to a story.

Imagination and curiosity can be developed in children when you read to them. Starting to read to your child when they are young will help to develop their imagination and curiosity. I think we all remember some favorite stories as a child whether it was the nursery rhyme or the fable. Perhaps it was something as simple as The Cat in The Hat. Often times we could picture ourselves in the story or imagine the place in the story.

Reading to children teaches them emotional regulation and comprehension of a story. Certain stories can also teach moral lessons on how to treat others or how to handle a certain situation. A love of learning is fostered by reading to your children. Vocabulary is forming when you read to your children and general knowledge is being learned.

Why not go to your local library or even purchase books through Thrift Books? The benefits and rewards of reading to your children will be well worth it. Make reading a regular part of the day in your household and watch a child’s abilities grow.
