There are so many different ways you can decorate a pumpkin. I think the whole experience of going to the pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins with your kids is magical. Many farms have mazes you can enter to pick your pumpkin. There are also other activities at the farms to participate in with your kids such as the corn cannon shooting game. Your kids will often also have the experience of petting the farm animals.
Many farms sell squash along with the pumpkins to cook or make a center piece with. Picking your pumpkin is something that is very individual to each kid. Some like big pumpkins, some like small or some like to pick the twisty pumpkins because they are unique. Let your kids pick the pumpkin of their choice. We all have unique personalities and so do children.
The materials you decide to use to decorate your pumpkin are up to you. You could carve a pumpkin either free hand or with a template. A drill can be used to drill out the pumpkin or a hand carving kit sold in many stores. You can also paint a pumpkin using tempera paint or other types of paint that will work on pumpkins. Markers can also be used on pumpkins to draw faces on the front. Stickers can be attached to pumpkins to add some unique decoration. The choice is up to you as to what look you are going for on your pumpkins. Different accessories such as yarn for hair and different hats can be put on your pumpkins to make them characters with unique personalities. The sky is pretty much the limit to your imagination.
