Life challenges and joys for women

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Popular old games for children

Children are often found on electronic devices now and don’t really get much opportunity to play outside. When I was growing up, many of the children in my neighborhood would play together and they learned social skills this way. Many different games were played in the neighborhood that did not require much time or money…

Parenting

When people become parents, they may raise their children differently than others. Some parents may be strict with their children and their time. Other parents may be into the gentle parenting style and want their children to be sensitive individuals. We all have our preferences for the way that we parent our children. Some parents…

Television Shows

What has happened to our culture and shows that are offered on tv now ? When I was growing up we had shows such as the Brady Bunch, Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. These shows taught lessons to kids and allowed children to learn about family. I don’t really see any of these…

When children come into this world we are supposed to nurture, love and protect them. Some people are so selfish that they are unable to do that correctly and then those children grow up to deal with the problems the parents have handed them.

One of the basic fundamental things that a child should grow up with is self-esteem. Everything in life springs from that self-esteem. If you have low self-esteem, you may put up with treatment that is less than you deserve. If you grow up without self-esteem you may pursue jobs or careers that are below what you can actually do or work in environments that are toxic. Just about all your choices in life boil down to the amount of self-esteem you have. When a parent robs their child of self-esteem, they are robbing that child of an opportunity to reach their potential, to have healthy relationships and to not have long term health problems from constant stress.

We teach all kinds of subjects in schools but, we never teach parenting and self-esteem to teens in high school. I ask myself why when it is one the most important subjects we should be teaching.

You make some very good points.
Looking at the world around me, it seems that a lot of people base their level of self-esteem on comparison with others. So to feel good about themselves they have to “prove” that they are better than others by putting others down – be it their children, people they work with or just generally spewing arrogance and bullying. Especially for children, this sets up a vicious cycle of copying what they see.
However, real self-esteem does not come from comparison with others, but from a deep-down belief in yourself. But to teach that, you first have to have it, and more often than not, you have to ‘grow’ that yourself, which is much harder than just putting others down.

Yes, I agree what we often see in our culture in comparison to others. I’ve heard it at meetings with my husband’s friends that the work I had been doing was not paying very well. Well you don’t know my situation, and what I’ve been through to get to where I am today is what I wanted to say. I just sat there quietly thinking to myself who are you to judge. Society looks down upon those that stay home to nurture their children as well. Women who should be supporting each other’s decisions and what is best for their family are now judging a decision that may be different than theirs and bullying other women.

I have worked in preschools where it is fine to leave your son or daughter off for someone else to raise them all day and we don’t question that, yet we question someone who has not gone as far in their career or made as much money. Children get dropped off sick so that the parents can have two incomes with the big house, expensive vacations, nice clothes but, have someone else raise their children. Maybe this what is wrong with our society today. People are selfish and prioritize their own needs over even their own children. How are we to raise a society of children with high self-concept when the parents don’t even want to spend any time with them or worry about their feelings.

Self-esteem does come from a deep-down belief in yourself. Some of us did not receive that from home and took scraps we received from others in the world to build our own worth piece by piece.
