When you bring home a new baby and want your baby to sleep through the night. The trials and tribulations of getting them to sleep through the night can be challenging.
I raised two boys and my first son it was difficult to get him to sleep through the night. He would wake up at 3 am every night for two years. I probably contributed to him not sleeping as well. When you are a new mom you don’t know what works and what doesn’t
I would go and retrieve him at 3 am when he cried, feed him and put him back down. I would respond right away as I did not want him to cry it out. A friend of mine had mentioned the Ferber method to me at the time and had I tried it he probably would have slept through the night at one point.
The Ferber method of trying to get a child to sleep through the night states that you should respond at different intervals to a baby crying and increase the time you wait to respond each time so that the baby self-soothes. I couldn’t stand the sound of him crying because for me it meant he was in some kind of distress and his needs were not being met. I did learn later it is ok to allow your baby to self soothe at times.
