When you bring home a new baby and want your baby to sleep through the night. The trials and tribulations of getting them to sleep through the night can be challenging.

I raised two boys and my first son it was difficult to get him to sleep through the night. He would wake up at 3 am every night for two years. I probably contributed to him not sleeping as well. When you are a new mom you don’t know what works and what doesn’t

I would go and retrieve him at 3 am when he cried, feed him and put him back down. I would respond right away as I did not want him to cry it out. A friend of mine had mentioned the Ferber method to me at the time and had I tried it he probably would have slept through the night at one point.

The Ferber method of trying to get a child to sleep through the night states that you should respond at different intervals to a baby crying and increase the time you wait to respond each time so that the baby self-soothes. I couldn’t stand the sound of him crying because for me it meant he was in some kind of distress and his needs were not being met. I did learn later it is ok to allow your baby to self soothe at times.

There are so many different things on the market now that can help babies to sleep through the night. Sound makers that you can put in the baby’s room which sounds like the ocean, a rainstorm or some other soothing sound. There are swaddles to wrap your baby in and make them to feel comfortable. Some of the things on the market now are white noise machines, night lights with rainbow colors, music and light elephants, V-tech Safe and Sound Storytelling Soother, and Sound Spa products.

There are also many books out about getting your baby to sleep that suggest giving your baby a warm bath before bed to help soothe them to sleep. Rocking them and swaddling them tight in blankets. Dr. Sears and Ferber suggest their different techniques to help a baby sleep through the night. Each method is kind of trial and error until you find something that works.

I hope you get to enjoy your new baby and find a technique that works for you to put your baby to sleep. Learn to enjoy the trials and errors of raising a baby. Eventually they do outgrow the lack of sleeping through the night.
