Things to Teach Kids Before Kindergarten

Things move so quickly in public schools anymore. I worked as a substitute teacher for several years in elementary schools and discovered that kindergarten is like first grade now. Who would have thought that we would be pushing our children so much to succeed and not allowing them to be children as much. It seems…

When you are a parent there are certain milestones that your children should reach at certain ages. It’s good to know what those milestones are for your children to reach. Your pediatrician is also a great guide for figuring out what milestones should be reached and whether your child has reached them.

One milestone that your child should reach is smiling for the first time. Another milestone that your child should reach is rolling over. A third milestone that your child should reach is pulling themselves up on furniture to stand. Waving bye is another milestone that your child should reach. Taking a first step is an additional milestone. Speaking a first word such as mama or dada.

Children reach these milestones at different rates of development. As long as your child has developed these skills by a certain age. If your child is a little behind others but, still developing and has not reached that certain age yet then they are not behind.

There are certain areas of development that you should look at to see if your child has development delays and your pediatrician can give you a timeframe your child should be learning certain skills.

Cognitive skills are thinking skills and a clue that your child may have a cognitive delay is they have trouble solving a problem or following directions. Social emotional development has delays and the things to look for are the ability to get along with others, communicating needs, expressing their feelings, ability to understand social cues, having a conversation. Additional areas to watch for are the ability to deal with changes to their routine.

Speech and language skills are an area that you should watch for milestones. Your child should not have difficulty speaking or understanding works. Using and understanding language is a clue to whether your child is able to use these skills.

Fine and gross motor skills usage is a skill that children should develop by a certain age. This means the ability to coordinate small fine or large motor movements with muscles. If your child has trouble writing or coloring with a crayon they have trouble with fine motor skills. A child who has trouble with gross motor skills will have some difficulty walking, sitting up and rolling over.

It’s best to interact with your infants and toddlers on a daily basis so you know whether they have developmental delays and provide an environment that allows your child to use these skills. Toys that foster learning, speaking to your children, providing crayons to color and an opportunity for your children to explore their environment will all foster children learning these skills.
