If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Developmental Delays in Children

When you are a parent there are certain milestones that your children should reach at certain ages. It’s good to know what those milestones are for your children to reach. Your pediatrician is also a great guide for figuring out what milestones should be reached and whether your child has reached them. One milestone that…

Infants and Sleeping

When you bring home a new baby and want your baby to sleep through the night. The trials and tribulations of getting them to sleep through the night can be challenging. I raised two boys and my first son it was difficult to get him to sleep through the night. He would wake up at…

Car Seats for Children

I remember when I first bought a car seat for my kids. I was sure to follow on the rules in order to keep my kids safe. One year the car seat was facing one way the next it was facing the other. Alot of rules and regulations to keep up with. The latest information…

Things move so quickly in public schools anymore. I worked as a substitute teacher for several years in elementary schools and discovered that kindergarten is like first grade now. Who would have thought that we would be pushing our children so much to succeed and not allowing them to be children as much. It seems a lot is about achievement anymore and don’t get me wrong I wanted my children to do well in school and maximize their abilities.

I did put my children in preschool one day a week so that would have socialization and I could have one day off. My kids enjoyed learning there and loved meeting other children. One day a preschool teacher approached me and asked why my son did not know his ABCS yet. I wasn’t aware that he needed to know them before starting preschool. Well, I was told that preschool is like kindergarten now and kindergarten is like first grade. I had no idea of this knowledge prior.

Before kids start kindergarten, they should know there ABCS, numbers and colors. There was no mention about how to interact with other children which my sons were quite able to do. Children also need to be able to get along with others, take turns, share and make friends with others.

I think before kindergarten children should know how to button and zipper their clothing because a teacher may not always be available to help them. I think children should be fully potty trained before they start as I subbed in a kindergarten class with a child or two having accidents.

I think we miss the boat when we just teach children academics and not the other important things that they need to know to navigate kindergarten. Why not give them all the skills necessary to make them a success in school.

That sounds as if we are moving structured learning earlier and earlier, despite evidence that young children need experience-based learning to develop their brain to a suitable level for structured learning.

I agree with you on that one. This maybe why teachers are seeing more mental health issues in children. We are pressuring them to test and get high score but, not have an opportunity to explore their environment.

To paraphrase something I read from a child psychologist (US-city-based comment) “Why is the only time we children away from school in groups, they are wearing a uniform and being told what to do by a group of adults?”

I love the sign at the entrance to a few of our small rural communities here in NZ “Caution Drivers – free range children”
