When children are developing physically, they develop their gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory motor and body awareness.
The gross motor skills develop through things such as crawling, running, jumping, balancing and physical activity. The fine motor skills develop through things such as drawing, cutting with scissors, coloring or using utensils. The hand-eye coordination gets developed through these activities.
Sensory motor skills are developed through a child using their senses such as taste, smell, touch, sound and sight that allow them to learn about their environment.
Body awareness is the last physical development are in children. Young children learn to develop independence in dressing, brushing their hair and teeth. Basically, hygiene routines that they must do every day.
A parent can help a child to learn these skills by providing opportunities for them to use them. Have crayons and safety scissors available to children for use. Allow opportunities for children to play outdoor learning to jump, run and balance at playgrounds. In addition, a parent can have certain toys that foster touch such as books with different textures. Allowing your children to try different foods will help them develop their taste senses. Playing music for young children that is geared towards them will allow them to use their sound motor skills. Another way would be to use toys like see and say which teach animal sounds. Sight can be developed by showing children different things in their environment as well as allowing them to see the how colors are different.
Fostering physical development in children is extremely important because it allows children to develop fully. When children are allowed to explore their environment and are given opportunities to engage with different things in that environment it allows them to develop fully.
Go enjoy interacting with your children in fun ways by providing some opportunities for them to use their physical development skills.
