I think it’s important not to forget that as a parent your job does not end when your child becomes a youth which is considered age 16-24. Youth still need guidance from their parents maybe even more so than little children. The decisions they need to make are bigger than those of children and they need help to navigate those changes. They need help in picking a career, getting some kind of education or training for their career and the soft skills that youth need to learn in order to make it in the world. Things that they need to learn is etiquette for being in the real world such as writing thank you letters after interviews. How to look for scholarships for college, what are good majors for them, how much money certain majors make. In addition, they need to learn how to drive, apply for college or vocational school. It’s also important to teach them how to interview for a job, acquire references and not to burn bridges in employment. Another important thing to teach them is about healthy relationships and how to treat your significant other. The next thing it is important to teach them is how to fill out an application for employment. Finally, as they are getting employment it is important to teach them about credit and establishing it so they can buy things such as a house or car.
Youth still need your guidance and help maybe not in the way they did when they were younger but, it is still important. They may not often times ask for your help as they feel like they want to figure out things on their own. I think that it is fine for them to figure things out on their own as it shows initiative. Just let them know you are there for them should they need you with any questions or help they may need along the way.
Enjoy your time with your youth and I hope you foster healthy relationships with them so you can enjoy many years into adulthood with your grown children. Happy bonding and teaching !
